Continue Exploring the ValEUs MOOC: The Role of Values in Foreign Policy

Each month, we would like to highlight one of the lectures from our Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) “Values in European Union Foreign Policy”. The course was developed by scholars from the ValEUs network and explores how values shape EU foreign policy and how these values are challenged in different contexts.

This month, we are featuring:

Lecture 2: Theoretical Perspectives on the Role of Values in Foreign Policy and Europeanisation by Jaroslaw Janczak, Adam Mickiewicz University

In this lecture we explore how the study of international organisations has evolved from a focus on their structure to an emphasis on their impact and the diffusion of norms. In particular, we examine how values have become central to the study of the European Union (EU), highlighting two key historical turning points.

We introduce the concepts of Europeanisation and de-Europeanisation, exploring how European integration drives domestic change and the dynamics of both top-down and bottom-up processes. Finally, we discuss the role of contestation in norm diffusion, recognising that contestation not only challenges norms but also plays a role in their reconstruction, with crises affecting both norms and institutions in complex ways.

The lecture is part of our free online course, which includes 13 lectures, readings, presentations and a final online exam. Participants who complete the course and pass the exam receive a digital certificate.
